Buckle up, readers, this is going to be a tough one. Described as a "transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss," Netflix's Pieces of a Woman follows Martha and Sean as they cope with an unimaginable tragedy after a home birth takes a fatal turn.
Directed by 2014 Prix Un Certain Regard Award-winner Kornél Mundruczó, the drama stars Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf as the young Boston couple who grapple with their loss and their fractious relationship over a yearlong journey. Martha, especially, must navigate her grief while battling her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn) and facing the publicly vilified midwife (Molly Parker) in court. The trailer is less than three minutes, but it perfectly highlights the undefinable grief Martha carries with her and promises a poignant portrait of anguish from Kirby that will garner some Oscar buzz. If you were a fan of Netflix's 2019 hit Marriage Story, you will definitely want to check out Pieces of a Woman. Watch the trailer above and be prepared for some devastation when Pieces of a Woman premieres in select theaters on Dec. 30 and on Netflix on Jan. 7, 2021.
