Ricky Gervais took to Twitter on April 13 to voice his disgust with hunter Rebecca Francis for taking a photo of herself with a dead giraffe that she'd killed. "What must've happened to you in your life to make you want to kill a beautiful animal & then lie next to it smiling?" Ricky wrote to his 7.1 million followers. He also reposted the photo on Facebook.
Rebecca, who won the reality TV show Extreme Huntress in 2010, is believed to have taken the photo in Africa the same year she appeared on the show. While she has yet to respond directly to Ricky's comments, Rebecca defended her actions in a statement to HuntingLife.com, saying the giraffe "had been kicked out of the herd by a younger and stronger bull. He was past his breeding years and very close to death. I chose to honor his life by providing others with his uses and I do not regret it for one second." So far, Ricky has been met with praise for speaking up on the issue. He has reposted many tweets of people applauding his decision to call Rebecca out, including the animal cruelty organization Animals Asia (@AnimalsAsiaUK), saying, "Thank you for your unending support of #animal welfare."
