There's nothing more satisfying than diving teeth first into a slice of watermelon on a hot Summer day. The fruit is tasty, refreshing, and — given that it's made up of 92 percent water — extrahydrating. Recently, watermelon extract has also been blowing up on social media as the trendiest new ingredient in skin care, thanks to its skin-quenching and brightening properties.

According to Pinterest, there's been a serious spike in curiosity surrounding the ingredient, with searches for the term "watermelon extract" up 229 percent (!) in the beauty category. There has also been a wave of new products featuring the ingredient, with brands using watermelon extract in serums, face masks, and even shampoo to restore moisture and radiance from head to toe. And the boom doesn't come without its merit: watermelon is high in antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and B6, to name a few, which are great for protecting your skin against free radicals from the sun and pollution. If you've been looking for new ways to sweeten up your beauty routine, this may just be the treat you've been missing.
